Welcome to Fremantle Coast!

Fremantle is a vibrant port city located in Western Australia, just a few kilometers south west of Perth. Fremantle Coast, in particular, is a popular destination for visitors worldwide due to its stunning beaches, historic buildings, and lively café and bar scene.

Beaches

The Fremantle coast boasts a number of beautiful beaches, including Cottesloe Beach, Leighton Beach and Port Beach. Cottesloe Beach is one of the most popular, offering a long stretch of white sand and clear turquoise waters that are perfect for swimming and surfing. Leighton Beach, just a 10-minute drive from Fremantle, is equally as stunning and offers plenty of beach activities including kite-surfing, volleyball and fishing. Port Beach is located on the edge of Fremantle and is popular with families, offering a large shaded playground, picnic areas and barbecue facilities.

Historic Buildings

Fremantle has a rich history and this is reflected in its many historic buildings, including Fremantle Prison, Round House and the Fremantle Arts Centre. Fremantle Prison, built in the 1850s, was a maximum-security prison until its closure in 1991. Today, visitors can take guided tours of the prison and learn about its fascinating history. Round House, built in 1831, is Western Australia’s oldest public building and has served as a prison, police lock-up and customs house in its time. The Fremantle Arts Centre, built in the 1860s, was originally used as a lunatic asylum before being converted into an arts centre in the 1970s. Today, it hosts exhibitions, workshops and concerts.

Cafes and Bars

Fremantle is renowned for its café and bar scene, with a range of options to suit all tastes and budgets. Some popular choices include Toastface Grillah for delicious grilled sandwiches, X-Wray Café for vegan and vegetarian options, and Little Creatures Brewery for great beer and pub food. For those wanting something a bit fancier, Bread in Common is a popular choice, boasting beautiful brick walls and a menu that focuses on communal dishes made with fresh, locally sourced produce. Many of the cafes and bars are located along High Street or near the Fremantle Markets, making it easy to hop between them during your visit.

Getting there and around

Fremantle is located just a 20-minute drive from Perth CBD, and is also accessible by train, bus or ferry. Public transport is efficient and easy to use, with regular services running between Fremantle and surrounding areas. Once in Fremantle, it’s easy to get around on foot or by bike, with a number of cycle paths and pedestrian-friendly areas to explore.
