Beaches

Historic Buildings
Fremantle has a rich history and this is reflected in its many historic buildings, including Fremantle Prison, Round House and the Fremantle Arts Centre. Fremantle Prison, built in the 1850s, was a maximum-security prison until its closure in 1991. Today, visitors can take guided tours of the prison and learn about its fascinating history. Round House, built in 1831, is Western Australia’s oldest public building and has served as a prison, police lock-up and customs house in its time. The Fremantle Arts Centre, built in the 1860s, was originally used as a lunatic asylum before being converted into an arts centre in the 1970s. Today, it hosts exhibitions, workshops and concerts.
